Castell Collen
(SO 055 628: NPRN 95708)
Castell Collen is a Roman auxiliary fort near Llandrindod Wells. It is situated in a strong position on an elevated spur overlooking the River Ithon. It was excavated in 1911-13 and again in 1954-57. The fort was reduced in size from 2.04 hectares to 1.44 hectares by reducing the western defence with a new western gateway and defensive structure. Adjacent to the fort is a vicus, where the civilian population lived, now mainly covered in an unmanaged wood. A bathhouse was excavated during the 1954-57 excavations.
