Cefnllys Castle
Cefnllys Castle lies 3 miles east of Llandrindod Wells. In a area much fought over by the English and Welsh, the castle exchanged hands a number of times. The hilltop ridge includes two medieval castles, possibly built within an earlier iron age fort. The first castle, on the north end of the ridge, was built around 1242 by the English Lord, Roger Mortimer. After loosing it to the Welsh forces and retaking it, he built a second castle at the south end of the ridge around 1270. This smaller castle was separated from the rest of the ridge by a deep rock-cut ditch. The central part of the hilltop shows marks of subsequent occupation including a number of fields and house platforms. The very steep eastern sides show remarkable field boundaries. Perhaps these steep slopes were once vineyards.
